Tips for sewing with stretch fabric

Sewing stretch fabric

can be a bit of a challenge, especially for those who are new to sewing. Stretch fabric, also known as knit fabric, is any fabric that has a certain amount of give or elasticity. This can make it more difficult to work with than non-stretch fabric, as it tends to move and shift while you are cutting and sewing it.

However, with a little bit of knowledge and practice, sewing stretch fabric can be a rewarding and enjoyable experience. Here are

some tips to help you get started:

  1. Choose the right needle: Stretch fabric requires a special needle with a slight ballpoint at the end. This helps prevent the needle from tearing or snagging the fabric as it passes through. Be sure to use a size 90/14 needle for medium to heavy weight stretch fabric, and a size 75/11 for lighter weight stretch fabric.

  2. Use a stretch stitch: A regular straight stitch will not have enough give to accommodate the stretch in the fabric. Instead, use a stretch stitch or a zigzag stitch to allow for movement. A triple zigzag stitch is also a good option for added strength and stretch.

  3. Use stabilizers: To help prevent your fabric from stretching out of shape as you sew, use stabilizers such as fusible interfacing or clear elastic. These will help hold the fabric in place and give you more control while sewing.

  4. Avoid using pins: Pins can create holes in stretch fabric, which can weaken the fabric and cause it to stretch out of shape. Instead, use fabric weights or clips to hold the fabric in place while sewing.

With a little practice and patience, sewing stretch fabric can be a fun and rewarding experience. Don't be afraid to experiment and try out different techniques and stitches to find what works best for you and your projects.
